La acústica de los iglús is a curious compilation of short-stories the reader will have to resist tying together. The stories range from realistic (a first-hand account of a hospital patient, a story of two friends on a cruise) to futuristic science-fiction (a heartbroken woman on a lonely interstellar journey, the story of an octogenarian couple traveling through time and space in a cable car). But they are all marked by transportive prose. All told with rhythmic cadence and unmistakable musicality. All dotted with peculiar, bizarre, and oftentimes haunting observations. All highlighting the loneliness and depth of the human mind. All works of the absurd.
Almudena Sánchez masterfully presents these characters and their extraordinary circumstances--a nod to her background in journalism. Finding meaning and judging the characters’ actions and reactions are tasks left to the reader. As such, this book would be well-received by an American audience.
