SYNOPSIS

Since her days as a veterinary student, Karmele had a clear idea that she wanted to work with wild animals. Today, at the age of 43, her passion and perseverance have been rewarded as she now directs an NGO in Borneo (Indonesia) dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of orangutans. In this book she tells us her story, her childhood fascination with nature, her studies and her first jobs working in wild animal rescue centres, how she landed in Jakarta as a volunteer, and the impact on her life of meeting Jojo, an abused, captive orangutan living tied to a post among heaps of rubbish. Orangutans are group of primates that are only found in Borneo and Sumatra. Their ongoing survival is in the balance. That's why, Karmele not only tells us about her own life, but also shows us these intelligent primates and their environment devastated by palm oil plantations, talks about their needs, and the people who share their environment.
