"Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." This is the final line of a famous poem on Nazi persecution, falsely attributed to Bertolt Brecht, but actually written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller, on which this illustrated story is based. It is an allegory on the fragility of freedom and the vulnerability of democracy. A tale for adults that does not need words, since Fran Parreño's illustrations are more than capable of telling the whole story: Someone is coming home from work. Everyone else is walking in the opposite direction. They seem to be running away. The sky is full of the murmur of airplanes. Soldiers are seen on the street. But there is someone who continues walking, as if this had nothing to do with him. He does not look back or ask questions. But all the answers are waiting for him at home.
