Lucha, the old woman, is about to be killed by her husband in front of the astonished eyes of her granddaughter. The the anger accumulated over the decades has its origins on a specific date: the 2nd January 1921. A young Lucha survived the wreak of the steamship Santa Isabel on the island of Sálvora. While the menfolk celebrated the arrival of the new year, the women were left to brave the waves alone to rescue the survivors. They were considered heroines, but there were also rumours of less legend-worthy behaviour: tales of greed and pillage. That night, Lucha washed up on the beach dressed as a bride: she swept back her mane of hair, and the confusion drew her to a fellow shipwrecked traveller - naked but for his top hat. Who was he? An English musician, or the incarnation of the devil? Why does Lucha end up naked next to him? What happened that day marks her life and those of her daughter and granddaughter.
