What were Joseph's feelings when he heard that Mary was expecting a son? How did he feel when God called on him to be Jesus' father? How did he live out that call? What sort of relationship did he have with Mary and Jesus? There are no answers to any of those questions. The Gospels say hardly anything about Joseph. Only Matthew gives a short sketch of this just man who stood in as the father of Jesus. We can, however, think or imagine that the call Joseph received from God to be the caretaker of his son and the Virgin Mary cannot have been easy to fulfil. The author gives the voice to Saint Joseph to offer us a glimpse of what was hidden in his heart. These pages allow readers to approach the figure of of the man who took on the role of the father of Jesus and attempt to understand how he lived his life.
