Alberto Barrera (b. Caracas, 1960) is the author of the novels “También el corazón es un descuido” (The Heart is Also an Oversight), “La enfermedad” (The Illness) (Herralde Prize for the Novel, 2006), and “Rating”, and of the short story collections “Edición de lujo” (Deluxe Edition), “Perros” (Dogs), and “Crímenes" (Crimes), as well as two poetry collections. In conjunction with the journalist Cristina Marcano he published the first documented biography of the ex-President of Venezuela, “Hugo Chávez sin uniforme. Una historia personal” (Hugo Chávez Out of Uniform: A Personal History) (2005). He earned a degree from the School of Letters of the Central University of Venezuela, where he teaches classes in the professorial chair called Chronicles. For years he has also been a television scriptwriter for series shown in various countries. He contributes frequently to print media such as El País and Letras Libres, among others. He has written a Sunday column for the newspaper El Nacional since 1996.
